Maine Summer Hoop
Champions Again!
Portland ME,
For the 13th time in 28 years Class Acts has been crowned
summer league champs. Add to that the impressive other
hardware that adorns the teams "skydome" hangout and
you have yourself a lot of metal. 49 different league
and tournament first place trophies make it hard to
find a place to lien. But lets not get ahead of ourselves.
Class Acts easily handled 3rd place Prompto in this
summer's Maine Men's Basketball League held at the new
(and giant) Howard Sports Facility in Saco, Maine. The
final score, 65-42, did surprise some in attendance
as the young Prompto squad defeated, in overtime the
number one seated and highly experienced team from Augusta,
Margaritas.
Class Acts advanced from the semi-finals with a hard
fought battle over St. Joseph College 51-45.
"We Definitely had all the tools to go all the
way." point guard Lance Meader said. "This
was our biggest hurdle and we jumped just high enough
to win. I wasn't worried about the finals 'cause I knew
we would beat either team from the western bracket."
Leading by only 2 at the half, 30-28, it wasn't all
that clear until the start of the second half that Class
Acts would dominate. Bart Donovan, the teams leading
three point shooter had not scored in the first half,
but he started out by blistering the net with 3 deep
tres' in the first two minutes. He scored 15 points
in the second half coupled with Jay Brewer's 11 points,
and before the 10 minute mark, Class Acts had a twenty
point lead, 53-33. Prompto had been out scored 23 to
5 and all that was left to do was break out the cooler
of Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Jamie Header added 11 points, Jim Cole 9, Mike Boisinneau
5, CJ Vose 4, and Lance Meader with 3. Bill Simpson
DNP.
...and then
Newport RI,
It would have been nice to have had the last game of
the year be another championship for the men of red
and white, but it wasn't in the cards this time. Class
Acts bowed out of the late summer classic after losing
to Ferdanados Insurance of Manchester NH in the semi-final
round 48-38.
"We stayed out way too late Saturday night." according
to Mike Boisinneau. "This is always the last event of
the year, and after winning the summer league we just
wanted to unwind and have a good time together."
Too much fun apparently as the team looked exhausted
after the first game (11 am) on Sunday where the Class
Acts boys defeated Bonston's Basketball City winter
champions, Shad Inc. (53-44).
"That was big game for us. They beat us this winter
and we wanted redemption" said John Fitts. "After
that it was hard to rally for the 2 pm game. Outdoors
is just not our thing, especially with this wind! 38
points in a game for us is hardly, whadaya-callit, outstanding"
What was outstanding was the play of Carl Howell who
tossed in 25 of Class Acts points in Sundays first game
and another in 12 in game two. In spite of the stiff
breeze off the Atlantic Ocean, Carl went 9 for 10 from
the line and was named to the all tourney team.
